Metal workshops

A metal workshop is an enclosed steel shop: clear-span floor, roll-up for vehicles or stock, walk-in for people, and enough eave height for lifts, lumber, or a paint booth you add later. Carport.com workshops are the garage/building system aimed at work — 14-gauge American frames, 29-gauge panels, doors on any wall, certified packages for permits. 30×40 is a common shop footprint; we also build smaller hobby shops and long production bays. Free delivery and installation on a level site.

Start from a workshop you can see

Photos include enclosed bays and longer vertical-roof shops. Use them as door-and-span examples, then design around the work: mechanic, wood, fabrication, or a side business.

Metal workshop guide

Build the shop around the work, not a generic garage

A workshop fails when the door is too small, the eave is too low for a lift, or posts land where the table saw should go. Prefab steel avoids the post grid. Carport.com still uses residential-grade mill steel — the difference is the specification: more 12-gauge and Vertical roofs on longer bays, roll-ups on the wall that matches the drive, walk-ins so you are not heating the neighborhood every time you grab a tool.

Mechanic, wood, fabrication

  • Mechanic — roll-up sized to the vehicle, extra leg height for a lift, 12-gauge if you are in snow country.
  • Woodworking — walk-in, windows or later insulation, dust collection you provide.
  • Welding / fab — Vertical roof, thought about ventilation, concrete slab, certified if the county treats it as occupancy.
  • Side business — see also commercial if customers walk in.

Power, insulation, slab

  • We set the steel. Electric, insulation, and HVAC are yours or your trades — plan the slab and wall penetrations first.
  • Frame-outs for doors and windows you finish later.
  • Clearance is leg height. A two-post lift cares about that number, not the ridge.
  • Typical install about 30 days on a level pad.

Popular footprints

  • Hobby shops in the high teens to 20s wide.
  • 30×40 — a default American shop size (also on our 40×60 page when you need more length).
  • Longer Vertical bays for production or RV-height work.
  • Kits if you will build on un-level ground.

Workshop vs. garage vs. commercial

A garage stores vehicles; a workshop is that shell specified for work (doors, height, span). When the public walks in or the span goes warehouse, use commercial metal buildings. A shed is too small for most trades. Need only a covered bench? A carport or shelter.

Workshop uses

  • Auto and diesel repair
  • Wood and cabinet shops
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Contractor staging
  • Home business production
  • Studio or maker space

Metal workshop questions

What is a metal workshop building?

An enclosed steel shop with a clear-span floor and doors specified for work. Carport.com uses 14-gauge American frames (12-gauge upgrade), 29-gauge panels, and roll-ups or walk-ins on any wall.

Workshop vs. garage?

Same family of building. A workshop spec starts from the work: lift height, dust, welding, or a second business. A garage spec starts from parking. Many shops are garages with a more serious door and eave package.

Will you wire or insulate it?

No. We deliver and install the steel on a level site. Electric, insulation, and HVAC are separate trades. Tell us about penetrations and door locations before the slab so you are not cutting the building later.

What size workshop should I buy?

Work backward from the largest vehicle or machine plus circulation. 30×40 is a common U.S. shop. Extra height for lifts. Extra length for fabrication beds. The 40×60 category is the next step up.

Do shops need certification?

If you pull a permit or run a business occupancy, often yes. Certified wind/snow packages are available.

Is installation included?

Free delivery and professional installation on a level site, about 30 days typical. Kits available.

Can I buy a workshop kit?

Yes — same steel, you assemble. Required on un-level ground.

How do I get a workshop price?

Designer (start from garages or metal buildings) or a catalog photo. ZIP pricing. Call (855) 227-7678.
